Next January, I hope to be typing this from Hawaii.. Maybe I got a little too used to the 80 degrees of sunshine. I got back to Philly after 2 flights and 200 pages of Artie Lange on Monday night. Cank did an incredible job on the first half of The Bridge NYE run while I was with my family. I've been anxious to paint though, and Cank is out cashing in Christmas Gift Cards for cases of Canvas and Deco Markers as I type this just across The Betsy Ross Bridge. We turned Pedro's Basement, Dining Room, and Garage into a Studio for the week.
We started 2008 in Baltimore, and welcomed in 2009 with The Bridge. We stayed in the same hotel in Center City. The Bridge were playing in the ballroom, and we still didn't have permission to paint. We found out two days earlier; the hotel feared for their carpet. So this turned into a game-time decision, and required us to take our normal set-up to room 1003. I went inside and told the guy I'd need 4 luggage carts, and I'd need to be keeping one for the remainder of our stay. This wouldn't be a problem, however the paintings tried to take flight in 30 mph winds between the car and the cart, and we had 2 or 3 people helping us as cars backed up.
We hit another snag when about 1000 business cards fell from the cart and covered 10 to 20 feet of the lobby floor, this brought 2 or 3 more people to assist. We wanted to make an entrance.
We filled the room with paintings, and the cart. It didn't take long to get permission after assuring them we have painted over 400 shows, and have never left a mark behind, they pointed to a corner, said "after the food", "before Bridge", and I went back to the room to watch football. After getting some food and drink, We went to the room, and retrieved the Art-Cart just before 11.

This is the last lunch of 2008. It has been a great year for VORCAN. We featured paintings at the 30th Annual Art Expo in NYC in March. Followed by touring through the country creating 50 Paintings in 50 States in 50 Days. We sold a painting that got us to Alaska on day 49 and Hawaii on day 50. I moved to Portland, OR immediately after and Vort headed back to Philly. Soon VORCAN was painting on both coasts at once throughout the music festival season. We met back up at the Trinumeral Music and Art Festival in Deerfields, NC in August and once again painted collaboratively, touring throughout the Country. We toured up and down the West Coast from San Diego, CA to Seattle, WA several times this past Fall, including a stop in Vancouver, BC, introducing VORCAN to Canada. We then headed back to the East Coast to vote for Obama as we both were still registered in Pennsylvania. Bear Creek Music Festival and Thanksgiving in Florida. We painted The Bridge in the Carolinas as well as collaborating with them through this current holiday tour, leading up to the last, but by no means least, day of the year...December 31st, 2008. We will be painting Rebirth Brass Band and The Bridge at The Sheraton City Center in Baltimore this evening.
This year we have met incredible people, heard amazing music, and seen most of what this absolutely beautiful country of ours has to offer. We wish all of our friends, old and new, a very happy New Year full of health and happiness. We're excited to see what 2009 brings to this world...one thing is certain, we will be painting every step of the way.

Back in New Jersey today. I just picked Vort up in West Philly and we are on our way to paint The Bridge at The Welmont Theater in Montclair, NJ at 7PM. They will be supporting Dark Star Orchestra, so make sure you get there by 7! There were a lot of sad faces last night in Norfolk, VA when people showed up late and missed The Bridge's set. The count down of 2008 has begun! We will be in Baltimore tomorrow to paint The Bridge and Rebirth Brass Band at Mother's New Year's Eve Ball in the Center City Sheraton. We rung in 2008 last year with The Bridge in Baltimore and it was one of my top 5 new Year's of my life. Definitely excited for the reprise! Here's some pics...

"Imaginary Friends" are sometimes the best friends. The question with this piece, is who is imaginary and who is real? One of the last available krylon collabs of 2009, this piece is all about friendship no matter the size, species, or hair color. As Gene Ween would say "a friend is a friend is a friend"...get well soon Gene. The best friends we have made since we began painting live music have been The Bridge. Rising musical stars throughout the Nation, The Bridge are the perfect example of hard working musicians pouring their hearts out on stage all in the name of fun. Fun is the word that many of us can forget very easily, with so many things seemingly going wrong and life turning an unfair leaf, fun just may be the most important thing in our lives. Music is fun. We dance, we sing, we have fun. We create to have fun. So if you are down and out and don't feel like things are going your way, take a moment turn up that i-pod or boombox and get in rhythm to the music. It doesn't necessarily have to be The Bridge, but if you do listen to them, you are guaranteed to have fun!
I had a LOT of fun painting The Bridge both at The Birchmere Bandstand on Friday and at our favorite venue in the country, World Cafe Live Saturday night. I am looking to paint the Bridge once again this evening at the Norva in Norfolk, VA. They will be supporting Dark Star Orchestra and will begin their set promptly at 7:00PM. We were painting a Dark Star Orchestra show the first time we ever heard The Bridge...we were immediately won over. We will (hopefully) be painting The Bridge on New Year's Eve in Baltimore at The Sheraton City Center. Today's lunch is our newest collaboration. At the stroke of Midnight last night, "Boogie Monsters Totem" came to life. It has been awhile since we had created a totem. I am not sure if this painting is a totem to repel or attract boogie monsters, but it certainly exists as reminder of those creative corners of our imagination...the dark allure of other worlds lurking underneath beds and behind closet doors...
I am on my way to Alexandria, VA today to paint The Bridge at Birchmere Bandstand. It is an early show co-billed with New Potato Caboose. The Bridge will kick things off at 7:30 PM and both bands will play full sets. The Bridge will also be performing at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia tomorrow evening, as well as Richmond, VA on Sunday and Norfolk, VA on Monday....lots of live paintings are going to be created this weekend. Monster or not, it is time to boogie!

Merry Christmas! Today's lunch was finished just yesterday in my parent's art studio in Williamsburg, VA. It is one of many new Krylon Collabs that I have been working on for the past few days. Nearly 20 new studio collaborations will be made available during the next few Bridge shows leading up to a reprise of New Year's with The Bridge in Baltimore. "Blue Bears Have Fun" goes to show that you may be a stuffed animal in a witness protection program, but you can still have fun!

If you are in Philadelphia on December 27th, in addition to an evening with The Bridge, there is another very special show going on. The 2nd Annual Degicon will once again be held at VFW #22, 2535 Frankford Ave. What is Degicon you ask? Degicon is the annual Holiday conference of everything Deg I Cank. What is Deg I Cank you ask? It is many things, but most importantly it is a grass roots creation effort that began on 9/9/99 in State College, PA. Implementing art, music, and time travel, Degicank has produced a multitude of live music and art performances. At the core of Degicank is the greatest band I have ever heard, Planet 22. I have seen and painted a lot of music, but nothing has ever come close to the explosive, mind melting music that is Planet 22. It was the first band that both Vort and myself ever painted live and their music has inspired numerous VORCAN creations. Planet 22 will be performing once again at this year's Degicon. These days a Planet 22 performance is extremely rare, though I have heard rumors of an 09 Summer tour. If you have never heard Planet 22 and you are in the Philadelphia area, I highly recommend this show...it WILL blow your mind. The infamous Daily Supplement will also be reuniting for a performance as well. Festivities begin at VFW Post #22 at 5PM...Planet 22 will close the evening out at 10PM so if you arrive late, the best treat is yet to come. Today's lunch is another live music painting from the 9th Annual Happy Skalidays show at Alley Katz in Richmond, VA last Saturday. On Monday I posted the painting created during Tsunami Rising's set, today is the band that followed, Patent Pending, a rock/pop-punk band from Long Island, New York. This was one stop on their "She's a Ho Ho Holiday Tour". They delivered a Christmas infused high energy performance. Rocking out in elf costumes, pointy ears and all. Santa Claus even got in on the act! "Twilight" was created during their performance.
Tonight is the big night! I hope all of you kiddies make sure to go to bed early tonight and don't forget to leave out the milk and cookies!

At the stroke of midnight, "Night Hunter" was born. The first of many new paintings to be unveiled during this coming run of Bridge shows leading up to New Year's Eve at Sheraton City Center in Baltimore, MD. Many owls have been appeared in paintings this year...totems of knowledge, wise, nocturnal visionaries... As far as feathered friends go, the owl is one of my personal favorites. The Great Owl in "The Secret Of Nimh" is an iconic example of a wise and mighty creature. One landed in my path this summer the night before 4 Peaks Music Festival in Bend, OR...it could be the reason so many have continued to appear.
Golf was canceled today...our tee time 10AM and the real feel was 21 degrees...not golfing weather even by the most avid of players. Tomorrow looks to be 40 degrees...not ideal, but Golf will be played. Vort is back in Bonita Springs, FL today where the weather is considerably warmer and golf is a must. I am sure he will be caddying before the day is out.

Happy Holidays everyone! We apologize for the few lunches lately. We promise all new lunches this week, starting today with an early Monday morning lunch. This weekend I traveled to Richmond, VA to paint our good friends and long time collaborators, Tsunami Rising. New Jersey based Tsunami Rising, always brings high energy and creative original music, and Richmond was no different! "No Smoking Underwater" was created during their 40 minute set. One of five bands of the evening that performed at Alley Katz, be sure to keep checking the lunch for more releases from this show. It was a great evening, all the music was top notch and kudos to the promoter of the event for the festive decorations.
